Balanced Literacy |

| The John E. Burke School uses a balanced literacy approach. Five key elements, phonemic
awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension are emphasized during the literacy block. The literacy
block is made up many parts which may include reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading,
shared writing, interactive writing, guided writing or writing workshop, and independent writing. Children in the
lower grades need more shared and interactive reading and writing while children in grades 3-5 do not require any
interactive reading and writing at all. One of the most important features of our balanced literacy approach is the use of independent reading. Independent reading allows students to practice their skills as readers. Another feature is guided reading which is a small group activity working with students that have similar needs. The teacher's main purpose is to provide the students with effective reading strategies they can use in order to read increasingly challenging levels of text. The goal is to have the child be able to read independently using the reading strategies taught. |
