Mrs. McNiff

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to a beginning of another new school year! I am looking forward to working with you and your children. Here are a few informational items that may help with a good start to the new year.

Construction will begin on the roof and the boiler. We have made every effort to make this process safe and not obtrusive as possible. Dr. Herb Levine and I hosted an informational meeting on September 8, 2011 at 6:30 PM. with representatives from Daedalus Projects, Capeway Roofing Systems, Inc. and E. Amanti & Sons. We discussed the construction process and answer many questions and spoke to many concerns.

As a response and reaction to these conversations the boiler room construction times have shifted from 7:00 a.m.to 3:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The first hour of the their day will include prep work followed by the more extensive work in the nonoperational hours of the school day. This work will begin on Monday, September 12, 2011 and should be completed on Wednesday evening, September 14, 2011.

The chimney will be removed on Saturday, September 10, 2011 and the construction on the roof will begin on Saturday as well with a double crew to take advantage of the good weather after having lost this entire week to rain.

We have changed the dismissal process slightly to make it safer for your children. Students in Kindergarten and Grade 2 will be dismissed out the front door along with their siblings. Students in Grade 1 will exit door #3 at the end of the first grade wing and Grade 3, 4, and 5 will exit door #5 , the same door as the arrival. Students will be instructed to walk on the perimeter road away from the building. Students will exit and enter door # when going out and returning from recess.

Recess will occur every day, weather permitting. Please make sure your child is dress appropriately.

We are planning a memorial on Friday to remember the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11. It will be a simple ceremony around the flag pole with children reading a poem and ending with the patriot song "I Proud to be an America". The children will be encourage to wear patriotic colors; red, white, and blue in remembrance of all those who died.

We have a lost and found barrel in both the gym and the cafetorium. Every summer I bring bags of clothing to used clothing drop off centers. To avoid this loss of clothing and items, please remember to write your child's name in all sweaters, jackets, hats, gloves, backpacks, lunch bags, and water bottles.

The Burke School would like to welcome Maureen Merta who transferred from the West School as a special education teacher, who is replacing Christine Vail and Nicole Zaffini who is our new first grade teacher.

Your children are very important to us. Please feel free to call with any questions or concerns you may have. We look forward to a fun year of learning and growing.

Sincerely,

Judy McNiff
Principal
